In northwestern China, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a new vehicle tunnel has been opened, which has become the longest in the world. This was reported by the Chongqing Daily. The length of the tunnel on the Urumqi - Uwei expressway exceeds 22 kilometers.
The tunnel, named the "Tianshan Victory Tunnel," is a key element for the operation of the expressway that connects the north and south of Xinjiang. Now, the time required to pass through the mountains has been reduced from several hours to just 20 minutes, as noted by the Xinhua agency.
The Urumqi - Uwei expressway, which crosses the Tian Shan mountains, connects various settlements in the region. Its main structure includes 12 interchanges, 17 tunnels, as well as numerous bridges and crossings. The Tianshan Tunnel has set records in two parameters: it is not only the longest in the world but also the deepest — its maximum depth reaches 1.1 kilometers.
The Tian Shan, stretching 2,500 kilometers, divides central Xinjiang into northern and southern parts. Thanks to the new expressway, travel time between these regions has been reduced from 7 to 3 hours.
