As of the end of 2025, direct foreign investments from China in the economy of Kyrgyzstan reached $2.1 billion. Over the past five years, there has been an active growth in investments, with a particularly significant jump occurring after 2022, when Chinese investments amounted to $326 million. This allowed China to take second place among the largest investors in the country. In 2024, Beijing became the main source of capital for Kyrgyzstan's economy, announcing projects worth over $1 billion.
The EDB emphasizes that the largest portion of Chinese investments is directed towards infrastructure and industry. In particular, about $150 million has been allocated for road modernization in Kyrgyzstan, plus $120 million has been directed towards the construction and reconstruction of energy facilities, including 15 small and medium-sized hydropower plants. Approximately $85 million has been invested in the mining sector.
The construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway remains one of the key strategic projects. The company China Railway International is involved in its implementation, with China's share being 51%. The total amount of Chinese investments in the project is estimated at $3.5 billion, of which over $2 billion is provided in the form of concessional loans.
Significant investments are also directed towards the manufacturing industry. In the cement sector, the Kant Cement Plant, controlled by the Chinese company Yatai, stands out, with a capacity of over 1.2 million tons of cement per year. Investments in its development amount to about $100 million. In the metallurgy sector, one of the significant projects is the LLC "Alliance Altyn" in the Talas region, where total Chinese investments exceed $200 million.
At the same time, EDB experts warn of the potential concentration of Chinese capital in key sectors, which could lead to the formation of quasi-monopolies and an increased dependence on the import of equipment and labor. This, in turn, could limit the development of local businesses.
