In a recent interview with television channels, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration Adylbek Kasymaliev discussed key aspects of the energy situation in Kyrgyzstan, as well as plans to overcome the electricity deficit.

He reported that currently, electricity consumption in the country amounts to 18.9 billion kWh, which exceeds the level of production.

“Out of the total volume, we produce 14 billion kWh, and the remaining 4.3 billion kWh are purchased from neighboring countries,” he added.

Kasymaliev noted that the hydropower potential of Kyrgyzstan remains underutilized.

“Currently, only 10% of the hydropower potential is being used. We are actively engaged in the construction of small, medium, and large hydropower plants, and this year more than 10 small HPPs have been commissioned,” he reported.

The Kambar-Ata-1 hydropower plant project is of particular importance, as it is strategic for the region and provides irrigation water to neighboring countries.

Additionally, there is a significant increase in attention to renewable energy sources: more than 10 agreements have been signed for the construction of solar power plants with a total capacity of over 5,000 MW.

The first solar power plant with a capacity of 120 MW will soon begin operations in the Kemin district.

“The construction of hydropower plants and the development of solar energy will help us achieve energy independence in the coming years,” he concluded.
