President Sadyr Japarov in Bishkek, at the event for the laying of the capsule for the construction of the residential area "Altai," met with local residents and discussed changes in the energy sector that have occurred over the past few years. During the conversation, one citizen living in the suburbs raised the issue of frequent power outages. In response, the president stated that without the large-scale modernization carried out over the past four years, Kyrgyzstan would continue to face serious electricity shortages.
“If it weren’t for our efforts in the energy sector, we would be sitting in the dark now, like in the 19th century,” emphasized Japarov. He pointed out that when he came to power, the situation in this area was extremely difficult: hydroelectric stations built during the Soviet era had not been updated for decades.
Among the main successes noted by the president are:
- complete modernization of all hydropower plants that were commissioned during the Soviet period;
- repair of four hydro units at the Toktogul HPP with a total capacity of 240 MW;
- commissioning of 28 new hydropower plants;
- modernization that allowed avoiding shortages that were previously difficult to compensate for even in winter.
The president also added that previously there were virtually no factories and plants in the country, and electricity shortages in winter had become a common occurrence, while in summer electricity was supplied “as possible.”
“If I had just sat back like before, there would be no new schools, factories, or kindergartens. Previously, the population's consumption was 14 billion kilowatt-hours, now it has increased to 20 billion kilowatt-hours,” he noted.
Regarding the future of the energy sector, Japarov assured that by 2028 Kyrgyzstan will completely overcome the energy crisis, abandon electricity imports, and focus on the active development of renewable energy sources.
Among the upcoming projects:
- On December 15, the first solar power plant in the country will be launched in Balakchy;
- the implementation of the Kara-Kechinskaya TPP with a capacity of 1200 MW will continue;
- new facilities in the field of renewable energy sources and generation are planned.
The president emphasized that the authorities are actively engaged in the development of the energy sector: “We are not sitting idly by.”
