Saule Akylbekova, a 60-year-old resident of the village of Bakai-Ata in the Bakai-Ata district of the Talas region, found a new hobby after retiring — she started growing flowers, which has become an additional source of income for her.

By profession, Saule is an accountant and worked for many years in the village administration and the Social Fund.

“After retiring, I became interested in flowers. In my childhood, my mother planted them in our yard, and everyone around admired their beauty. This inspired me too. I started with outdoor flowers and then moved on to geraniums, as they are easy to care for. This became the beginning of my flower business,” she shared.

Her first participation in a fair brought her about 7000 soms from the sale of geraniums and other houseplants, allowing her to purchase new seeds.

Now, her home boasts over 60 species of flowers. Customers often come to her house, and on holidays, she displays her flowers at fairs.

“My husband actively helps me. Together, we collect special soil in the forest and mix it with purchased enriched soil for flower growth. Previously, many planted ordinary climbing plants, but now the demand for quality and beautiful flowers has significantly increased,” she noted.

Her most valuable specimen — a Thai euphorbia, which grows in a bucket and costs from 1500 soms, is in high demand among buyers.

“I teach neighbors and acquaintances how to care for flowers, make gifts with seeds, and help with planting. If they have questions, I consult them. I myself receive a lot of information through the internet,” added the flower enthusiast.

In her village, she is affectionately called “Saule, who sells flowers.”

“I have different customers, and I try to find an individual approach to each. One case touched me especially. A boy from the village, a 4th-grade student, came to me. He saved money for a whole year that he was given for pastries, and in the end, he saved 600 soms to buy a flower for his mother. I gave him the most beautiful flower without asking for extra payment,” she shared.

The couple is raising two daughters and three sons. According to Saule, her husband is also passionate about flowers.

“He says that flowers help relieve stress, purify the air, and create a relaxing atmosphere. We hardly have any quarrels in our family; he jokes: ‘Saule, be quieter, let’s not argue, otherwise your flowers will be offended.’ Flowers have now become a part of our home; they are in every room,” she concluded.
