According to WHO data, alcohol affects mortality more than any other psychoactive substance. In 2019, approximately 145,000 cases of death from injuries related to alcohol consumption were recorded in Europe, with the most common causes being suicides, road accidents, and falls.
Alcohol-related risks:
- Alcohol consumption leads to decreased self-control, slowed reactions, impaired coordination, and an increased likelihood of risky behavior, which often results in fatal incidents.
- More than 40% of deaths from interpersonal violence in Europe are also related to alcohol, particularly affecting women and children. Alcohol is a significant factor in cases of domestic violence.
- For youth and adolescents, alcohol is one of the leading causes of premature death, disability, accidents, drownings, and falls. Even with infrequent use, young people often binge drink large amounts in a short period, significantly increasing risks.
The highest levels of alcohol-related mortality are observed in Eastern Europe, where in some countries more than 50% of deaths from injuries are associated with alcohol consumption.
