Jamilya Dzhamanbaeva, the ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan, has called on government institutions to intensify joint efforts in the fight against domestic violence.

She noted that the measures taken have not yielded significant results, and the issue of violence against women and girls remains extremely relevant.

Dzhamanbaeva urges law enforcement agencies to conduct prompt and thorough investigations of each case of violence, as well as to apply strict measures against the perpetrators to demonstrate the unacceptability of impunity for such actions.

Recently, information appeared on the internet that a husband set his wife on fire by dousing her with gasoline.

At the ombudsman's direction, the institute's staff contacted the mother of the victim.

According to the mother, the tragedy occurred on October 15, 2025, in the village of Boo-Terek in the Bakai-Ata district of the Talas region.

The 28-year-old T.K.M. got married six years ago and is the mother of two daughters.

According to her, that evening her son-in-law came home in a state of intoxication, had a quarrel, and beat his wife.

“He threatened her with an axe, then went outside and returned with a can of gasoline, which he poured over my daughter. He went to look for matches, and my daughter managed to hide her frightened children in another room. However, she could not escape. As soon as he lit the match, the fire erupted on her. She ran outside and tried to extinguish the flames with water, while passersby, hearing her cries for help, took her to the hospital,” the mother of N.K. recounts.

Three days after being hospitalized in Talas, the woman was transferred to Bishkek due to her serious condition. She spent a month in intensive care and underwent treatment in the burn unit of the City Clinical Emergency Hospital until December 18.

The husband's relatives, without informing her family about what had happened, took the woman back to Talas.

According to the mother, the husband's relatives deceived the doctors, claiming that the daughter-in-law received burns while igniting the stove with gasoline and accidentally splashed herself.

T.K.M. only recently told her relatives the truth when her husband came home drunk again and started beating her. At that moment, she called her mother asking her to pick her up.

Now the woman and her children are in Bishkek with her mother.

The victim needs psychological support and further treatment, as she sustained 60% burns on her body. They have filed a complaint with the Lenin District Department of Internal Affairs.

According to the Talas prosecutor's office, the complaint from Bishkek was forwarded to the Bakai-Ata District Department of Internal Affairs, and an investigation has begun.

The Akýkatçy Institute is ready to provide the woman with legal and psychological assistance.

According to information from the Bakai-Ata Department of Labor, Social Protection, and Migration, the 32-year-old husband of the victim works at the Talas city hall and also sustained minor burns. During the hospitalization, a friend looked after the children.

The ombudsman calls on law enforcement agencies to conduct an objective investigation of this incident and hold those responsible accountable in accordance with the law.
