The village of Katran is located in the Leilek District of the Batken Region and is one of the major rural settlements in the area, with a population of about 7,000 as of 2021.

The village is situated 125 km from the regional center and 50 km from the district center, at the beginning of the Kozu-Baglan River, which is a tributary of the Lailak River.

Neighboring settlements include Baul and Ozgorush.

Near the village are the caves of the prophet David, which local residents consider sacred and historical monuments.

Close to the village is the gold ore deposit "April," the development of which was suspended in 2012.

The village was founded in 1930 and gradually developed as a center of rural life.

Currently, the village has modern buildings, roads, and irrigation systems that are on the path to improvement.

The total area of the village covers several hundred hectares, part of which is allocated for residential development.

For a long time, there was one kindergarten in Katran, which was attended by about 130 children, although there are more than 1,000 preschool-aged children in the district. Support from international organizations allowed for the construction of a new kindergarten "Altyn-Beshik," which opened in 2015 for children aged 2 to 6 years.

In December 2024, a FAP (Field-Attached Point) "Özgörüş" was opened in the village, serving about 8,000 people and providing primary medical care. The new building was constructed in 2024 and is equipped with everything necessary for quality medical services.

The word "Katran" does not translate into Russian, as it is already the Russian name for the plant.

Japar Ursutamov, a local resident, claims that the name of the village is related to the plant. In this area, "katran" shrubs grew, and during wartime, their fruits were dried and used as food because they had a pleasant taste.

Reference

Katran is a wild plant (a representative of wild cabbage from the cruciferous family) that once grew abundantly in this area. This hardy plant was used for food (young parts) and as fodder for livestock, and it was valued for its ability to grow in arid conditions.

According to local legends, in difficult times, katran was a source of nourishment for people, which explains why the village was named in its honor, considering the plant "salvational."
