Sam Altman predicted superintelligent AI 'in a couple of years'

In his speech, Altman emphasized that such predictions require serious analysis, even if they may turn out to be inaccurate. He noted that the world is entering an era of rapid technological changes that affect not only business and science but also the global political arena.

The head of OpenAI called for a more democratic approach to artificial intelligence, warning against its concentration in the hands of individual countries or corporations. He stressed that such centralization could lead to systemic threats and even global crises, while more equitable access to technologies would increase the chances of their safe use. Altman also expressed concerns that societies might resort to authoritarian measures for the sake of technological achievements, which he believes is a risky compromise.

As a solution to the problem, he proposed creating an international coordinating body similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Such an institution, in his opinion, could quickly respond to emerging threats and develop common rules for AI development at the international level.

Altman acknowledged that the development of AI will lead to job losses; however, he expressed confidence in people's ability to adapt to new conditions. "Technologies always change the labor market, but we invariably find new opportunities for employment," he added. The head of OpenAI emphasized that advanced AI systems in the future could surpass both corporate executives and scientific researchers.

During his visit to India, Altman also reported that over 100 million residents of the country use ChatGPT weekly, with more than a third being students. He noted that India ranks second in size of the market for the company after the USA and is one of the fastest-growing regions for OpenAI.

Additionally, OpenAI announced a partnership with Tata Consultancy Services to create data center infrastructure for AI in India. The project will start with a capacity of 100 MW with potential expansion to 1 GW and will be part of the global Stargate initiative.
