Meta, the owner of several of the world's most popular social platforms, has announced the acquisition of a new project dedicated to bot interaction.

As it became known on Tuesday, the company purchased Moltbook — a social network where artificial agents communicate with each other. This event underscores Meta's growing competition with companies like OpenAI for attracting talented specialists and user attention. In a time when artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into everyday life, tech giants are striving to determine how best to position themselves in this rapid race, which resembles a technological arms race, CNN reports.

Moltbook attracted attention in Silicon Valley last month when millions of bots registered on the platform within just a few days after its launch. Some industry experts saw this as a significant breakthrough, demonstrating how AI agents can interact with one another. At the same time, other specialists expressed doubts, stating that the platform contains fake agents and low-quality AI solutions, which requires a cautious approach to it.

Meta's acquisition of Moltbook occurred just a few weeks after OpenAI attracted the founder of the company that developed the technology behind this platform, known as OpenClaw. The Moltbook team will now become part of Meta's superintelligence labs. A company representative noted that Moltbook's approach "opens new horizons for AI agents to work for the benefit of people and businesses."

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dismissed the excitement around Moltbook last month, claiming that the real breakthrough was OpenClaw — an autonomous open-source AI agent that serves as the foundation for bots on the new site. Altman expressed confidence that this technology will be "key" for OpenAI's products.

In December, Meta acquired the startup Manus, specializing in AI agents, as part of the company's strategy to expand its team of superintelligence experts. Last year, Meta also invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and attracted its CEO.

However, Meta and other major tech players are under pressure to prove the profitability of their investments in AI. This is particularly relevant given that competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google continue to develop new and improved models of their chatbots. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated during a conference call in January that the company's new AI models would be presented "in the coming months."
