A group of international researchers presented the results of a long-term study that lasted 47 years and focused on the physical activity of the population. The scientific work was published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle on November 16, 2025.

The study was conducted on a Swedish population cohort and covered the lifespan of participants aged 16 to 63 years. The scientists analyzed aerobic endurance, muscle strength, and power.

According to the study's data, maximum physical fitness is reached by the age of 36, and after 35-40 years, there is a gradual decline in physical capabilities, which accelerates with age. On average, by the age of 63, people lose about 37% of their physical performance.

Moreover, as the researchers found, the rate of decline in physical activity is similar for both men and women, despite men generally showing higher absolute values.

The authors of the study emphasize the importance of regular physical activity as a key factor in slowing down age-related changes. Transitioning to an active lifestyle can significantly improve physical performance even in middle age.

It was also noted that individuals with higher education demonstrate better aerobic and muscular endurance.

The researchers conclude that the decline in physical fitness begins earlier than previously thought, highlighting the need to reassess methods for preventing muscle mass loss with age.
