How Parents of Children with ASD Can Preserve Their Strength and Boost Their Child's Self-Esteem – A Psychologist's Response
In her opinion, burnout is inevitable, as caring for a child requires significant emotional and physical effort. This is especially true for those parents who simultaneously take on the roles of psychologist, therapist, physical therapy specialist, and home organizer.
Kan emphasizes the importance of support from loved ones. Assistance with daily tasks—whether it's cooking, accompanying the child, or fulfilling household duties—allows parents to reduce their burden and conserve their energy. In the absence of systemic support, it is important to reassess expectations and avoid unrealistic goals.
The specialist recommends taking small steps, maintaining a sleep schedule, eating properly, and taking care of one's physical condition. A decrease in energy should be viewed as a temporary dip rather than a sign of complete burnout—this is a natural process that will be followed by recovery.
The psychologist also highlighted the importance of building self-esteem in children with ASD. Over time, they may face difficulties in self-perception, especially if parental expectations do not align with the child's actual capabilities.
According to Kan, it is important for parents to set achievable goals, acknowledge even small successes, and genuinely celebrate them. Supporting the child's interests also plays a significant role: when adults engage in what truly matters to the child, it fosters a sense of confidence and competence.
The psychologist emphasizes that parents' belief in their child's abilities is one of the key factors in their development. Acceptance, support, and consistency in expectations contribute to strengthening self-esteem and create a solid foundation for future achievements.
Kan added that these recommendations can be beneficial not only for families with children with neurodivergences but also for all parents striving to raise a confident and resilient child.
