The collision occurred on I-70 highway, about 10 miles (16 km) from Terre Haute. According to footage from traffic cameras, the road was congested with cars, some of which had veered onto the shoulder.
Westbound traffic was halted. Preliminary reports indicate that the roads will remain closed for at least six hours.
According to the police, no serious injuries were reported as a result of the incident. Due to worsening weather conditions, law enforcement urged drivers to stay home and to take precautions: reduce speed and wear seatbelts.
A winter weather advisory has been issued in Vigo County, where the accident occurred, which will be in effect until 10:00 AM local time on November 30.
