In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Miami, Trump is seeking damages of up to $10 billion, claiming that the BBC distorted his words in the documentary "Panorama," which aired ahead of the 2024 elections. He insists that the editing led viewers to believe he was urging his supporters to storm the Capitol.

In the film, his statements about the march on the Capitol and the phrase "fight like hell" were edited together, while the part where he called for peaceful protests was omitted.

Trump has made two allegations: one for defamation and another for violation of Florida's law regarding unfair business practices, each seeking $5 billion.

The BBC has already apologized for the unfortunate editing, agreeing that it may have created a misleading impression of his speech, but stated that it sees no grounds for a defamation lawsuit. The corporation also does not plan to re-air the disputed material.

The scandal has led to one of the most serious crises in BBC history, resulting in the resignation of two high-profile executives.

Legal experts warn that Trump will find it difficult to overcome the protection of free speech in the U.S., as he will need to prove that the BBC acted with the intent to mislead the audience or showed gross negligence in the editing process to succeed in this case.
