The Mongolian sumo wrestler entered the Guinness World Records

Munkh-Orgil Batjargal, known as Tamawashi, has set a Guinness World Record by participating in 1,763 consecutive matches in professional sumo. This was reported by MiddleAsianNews.

On January 26 in Tokyo, he received the corresponding certificate.

Tamawashi began his journey in professional sports in 2004 by enrolling in a wrestling academy and has not missed a single match since then. He currently ranks fifth among the left-side maegashira.


Munkh-Orgil Batjargal was born on November 16, 1984, into an educated family. His father is a drawing teacher, and his mother is a Mongolian language instructor for foreigners.

In his youth, he engaged in various sports, including basketball, volleyball, and table tennis, and also tried his hand at traditional wrestling, bokh.

His path to professional sumo was paved by his older sister, who was studying at the University of Tokyo. Munkh-Orgil visited Japan several times at her invitation, and once she suggested he try wrestling. As a result, they met the famous wrestler Kakuryu, who helped him find a place at the Kataonami school.

Munkh-Orgil left his studies at the Ulaanbaatar University, where he was studying hotel management, and made his professional debut in January 2004.

His coach gave him the name Tamawashi, which translates to "precious ball" and "eagle."

It took him four years to reach the second elite division, jūryō.

After achieving the status of sekitori, he was finally able to return home on vacation.

In September 2008, Tamawashi made his debut in the top sumo league, makuuchi.

In January 2017, he became a sekiwake for the first time.

At the age of 34, in January 2019, Tamawashi won the Emperor's Cup, and in September 2022, at the age of 37 years and 10 months, he achieved his second tournament victory.

Tamawashi considers former sekiwake Tamakasuga his idol.

His hobby is handicrafts.


Among Tamawashi's favorite dishes is tempura, while he does not like eel and sea urchins.

Munkh-Orgil is married to a Mongolian beauty and has two sons.

His height is 190 cm, and his weight is 170 kg.
