In Greenland, the quota for passing the military service equivalent has been increased

According to the clarification, the Arctic education program lasts from six to twelve months, during which recruits acquire various military skills. The training takes place in the settlement of Kangerlussuaq, located on the west coast of Greenland.

This form of service is available to citizens of Greenland who are at least 18 years old, have passed a medical examination, and completed a written test. After completing the program, participants have the opportunity to continue their service in the Danish armed forces.

“As a result of the joint efforts of the Danish Ministry of Defense and the government of Greenland, it has been decided to increase the intake for basic Arctic education from 30 to 50 people, starting in the summer of 2026. This will meet the high interest of Greenlandic youth in acquiring skills in defense and training,” the Danish military stated in a press release.

The program became available in May 2024 for 22 participants, and then the quota was increased to 30 people.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark; however, U.S. President Donald Trump had previously expressed a desire for the U.S. to purchase the island. In response, the authorities of Denmark and Greenland emphasized the importance of respecting the territorial integrity of the region.
