Zelensky stated that Ukraine will hold elections if given two months of truce

“If we are given two months of truce, we are ready to hold elections. It’s simple,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of security and preparing the infrastructure for voting.

Zelensky also added that such a truce could be achieved by the United States applying pressure on Russia: “Let them push Putin for a truce. In this case, our parliament can change the law, and we will hold elections if necessary. We are open to elections if that is required by both Americans and Russians.”

Additionally, the President of Ukraine noted that he could propose a similar “truce for the Russians” if they organize fair elections in their country.

According to current Ukrainian legislation, holding presidential and parliamentary elections during martial law is prohibited. As a result of the Russian invasion, elections did not take place within the scheduled timeframe.

In December 2025, during peace negotiations, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated that “the time has come” to organize elections in Ukraine. In response, Zelensky said he was ready to hold elections within 60-90 days if security is ensured by the U.S. and Europe.

As reported by the Financial Times in February, citing sources, Zelensky intends to announce presidential elections and a referendum on February 24, the fourth anniversary of the conflict with Russia. However, the President of Ukraine noted that he is hearing about this for the first time.
