The XIV Paralympic Winter Games were officially opened in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
More than 600 athletes from 55 countries will compete for 79 medals in six different winter sports. Mongolia is represented by three athletes competing in Paralympic cross-country skiing and alpine skiing events. During the opening ceremony, the Mongolian delegation marched as part of the team of Paralympic skiers, including Dashdorj Tsegmid and Tserenpuntsag Biyambadorj.
These Games are notable for the fact that five countries are participating in the Winter Paralympic Games for the first time. The Italian city of Turin hosted this event 20 years ago, and the first Paralympic Games in Italy took place in Rome in 1960. Thus, Milan and Cortina are hosting the Winter Paralympic Games for the third time.
