Mongolia and Italy establish a strategic partnership
The President of Mongolia, Khurelsukh Ukhna, is on a state visit to Italy at the invitation of Sergio Mattarella, the President of the Italian Republic.
During this visit, the countries elevated their traditionally friendly relations to a strategic partnership. The Italian Republic became the second member of the European Union after Germany with which Mongolia has signed such an agreement. The press service of the President of Mongolia reports this in its statement.
Both presidents highly appreciated the dynamic development of bilateral cooperation and noted significant achievements in various fields. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateral dialogue, ensuring peace and security on the international stage, and achieving global sustainable development goals.
As part of the new strategic partnership, Mongolia and Italy agreed on the following areas of cooperation:
Strengthening political dialogue through mutual high-level visits, intergovernmental consultations, and active relations between parliamentary groups.
Deepening multilateral cooperation, especially within the framework of the UN, continuing active engagement on the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement signed in 2017 between Mongolia, Italy, and the EU.
Strengthening military and defense cooperation.
Expanding economic, investment, and trade ties through intergovernmental commissions and cooperation between the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Mongolia and the Italian Trade Agency.
Exploring new export opportunities and investment directions considering the potential for economic cooperation.
Supporting partnerships between SMEs and industrial sectors in key areas such as establishing supply chains in the fashion and cashmere industries, as well as technology transfer in the agricultural sector and renewable energy.
Developing energy infrastructure, transportation, logistics, water supply, waste management, ICT, and healthcare, as well as implementing innovative solutions to improve public services and ensure sustainable IT infrastructure.
Encouraging joint efforts in environmental protection, including sustainable management of natural resources and waste.
Developing cooperation in the mining and raw materials sectors.
Completing the preparation of a bilateral agreement on international road freight transport.
Facilitating cooperation in emergency management and civil defense.
Receiving Italian assistance in strengthening administrative, judicial, and legal systems within EU programs.
Strengthening scientific, educational, and cultural cooperation, including expanding interaction between universities and research institutions and providing scholarships.
Developing sports and tourism cooperation, utilizing the opportunities of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games "Milan-Cortina 2026".
As of today, Mongolia maintains a comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia and China, as well as strategic ties with the United States, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and India.
