As reported by Australia's Minister of Home Affairs Tony Burke, five Iranian football players have received humanitarian visas in the country after they refused to sing the national anthem before a match in the Asian Cup. The athletes were moved to a safe location under police protection.

According to information from Reuters, The Guardian, and AP, after the game against South Korea, the athletes faced the threat of persecution in their home country, where their actions were characterized as treason on state television.

According to Australian and international publications, applications for humanitarian visas were submitted on March 9. The decision to grant protection was made after several days of negotiations. Authorities also noted that assistance may be available for other team members.

According to ABC, the number of football players wishing to stay in Australia may increase to at least seven. Meanwhile, reports indicate that some players are still hesitant about returning due to concerns for the safety of their families in Iran.
