Afghanistan and Pakistan have ceased hostilities due to a holiday

The parties agreed to a temporary cessation of hostilities at the initiative of Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia.

Afghanistan and Pakistan announced a temporary cessation of hostilities, which occurred at the request of countries such as Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, according to information from RBC.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a representative of the Afghan government, confirmed this news in his message on the social network X.

Pakistan also suspended its military operations, as reported by the country's Minister of Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar. He noted that this decision was made at the request of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey. The temporary ceasefire will last from the night of March 19 until midnight on March 24.

The pause in hostilities is related to the celebration of the Islamic holiday of Orozо (Eid al-Fitr), which this year begins on the evening of March 19.

It is worth noting that Afghanistan began military actions against Pakistan at the end of February 2026 in response to actions taken by Islamabad.

The escalation of relations between the two countries began in early 2026 when Pakistan carried out airstrikes on Afghan territory, targeting the hideouts of Pakistani Taliban. Kabul claims that the strikes affected a religious school and residential houses, leading to numerous casualties, including women and children.

Since 1947, when Pakistan gained independence after the partition of British India, there has been a border conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The border, known as the Durand Line, was established in 1893 and stretches for 2,600 km. It was defined by an agreement between Afghan Emir Abdur Rahman Khan and British India representative Sir Mortimer Durand. Islamabad does not have claims to this border, while Kabul considers it colonial and does not recognize it, believing that it has deprived Afghanistan of part of its historical Pashtun territories.
