On Saturday night, around two o'clock local time, residents of the city witnessed loud explosions and the sounds of low-flying aircraft, as reported by AP, AFP journalists and witnesses to the event, covered by Reuters.
Explosions were heard in several districts of the capital, and people took to the streets, noticing flashes in the distance. In the southern part of the city, near a large military base, there was a power outage. Venezuelan officials have not yet commented on these events.
Reports of the explosions coincided with threats from President Donald Trump, who had previously announced the deployment of American military forces in the Caribbean region and did not rule out the possibility of military action against Venezuela.
In early September 2025, Trump sent eight warships to the southern Caribbean Sea, justifying this by the fight against drug trafficking. The President of Venezuela characterized the actions of the USA as a "hostile siege" and appealed to the UN for assistance in protecting the country's territorial integrity. In response, Trump stated that American military forces had sunk a Venezuelan drug boat in the Caribbean Sea and ordered the cessation of all diplomatic contacts with Venezuela. He also stated that the USA would continue attacks on drug traffickers abroad without the need for Congressional approval.
