On the night of Friday, December 26, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced via his social network Truth Social the execution of a "powerful and deadly" strike against Islamic State (IS) targets in northwestern Nigeria. According to him, these targets "have been brutally dealing with innocent Christians for many years, and sometimes even centuries," as reported by DW.

The President added: "I warned these terrorists that they would pay a high price if they did not stop the slaughter of Christians, and that happened tonight." He also emphasized that "under my leadership, our country will not allow radical Islamic terrorism to thrive."

Earlier in early November, Trump mentioned various military operations in Nigeria, including the possibility of deploying troops and airstrikes. In December, he imposed a partial travel ban for Nigerian citizens to the U.S.

As reported by CNN, in 2025, there were several mass killings based on religious grounds in Nigeria. In particular, in April, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu reported the deaths of at least 40 people as a result of an attack by militants on a Christian settlement in the northern part of the country. In June, according to human rights organizations, more than 100 people became victims of violence in the village of Yelwa, which is predominantly inhabited by Christians.
