
The attack on the school occurred while the police officers on duty engaged in a shootout with the assailants, who then climbed over the fence and forcibly took the girls from the dormitory. During the incident, one school staff member was killed while trying to protect the children, and another was injured and is currently in the hospital.
Witnesses reported that the militants began shooting to create panic among the students and staff.
In response to the attack, the police deployed additional forces to the area, as well as military personnel and self-defense groups. A search and rescue operation is underway in the nearby forests.
Over the past ten years, educational institutions in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups that kidnap children for ransom or to negotiate with the government.
The last major kidnapping incident occurred in March 2024, when around 300 students were abducted from a school in Kuriga, Kaduna State.
