“Shepherds have begun to notice killed jackals. All of them show signs of shotgun or bullet wounds. With the start of the hunting season, many sport hunters are culling jackals when they encounter them in hunting grounds. However, they often leave the carcasses of the killed ones and do not retrieve the wounded, allowing them to die in the reeds,” he explained.
Ecologist Alexander Sosnovsky, in turn, noted that the population of jackals in the Chuy region has significantly increased.
He pointed to two main reasons: the disposal of food waste by people at illegal dumps and the decrease in the number of sport hunters in the country.
“Culling jackals, which are considered harmful animals in hunting grounds, is allowed without restrictions throughout the hunting season. However, after killing, the carcass and skin must be disposed of properly and not left on site. This is unacceptable. Jackals are cannibals and quickly consume a dead individual. Thus, inexperienced hunters significantly increase the population of harmful predators, creating an excessive food base for them,” the ecologist explained.
