Stalin District, now known as Jumgal District, is located in the northwest of Naryn Region.

Historical Reference

In the early 19th century, the territory now called Jumgal District was part of the Kokand Khanate. In 1868, it was annexed to the Turkestan Governorate of the Russian Empire, and after the October Revolution, it became part of the Naryn County of the Jeti-Su Region. Since 1924, this territory belonged to the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Region of the Karakol-Naryn District, and from 1926, it was part of the Kochkor-Jumgal Volost of the Naryn Canton.

In 1930, Jumgal District was established as an independent administrative unit. In 1932, it was merged with Kochkor District and renamed Stalin District. On May 20, 1935, Jumgal District regained its independence. In 1962, after the dissolution of the Tien Shan Region, it became part of Kochkor District, and on January 20, 1965, it once again became a separate district.

Cultural Heritage

From 1934 to 1935, an artistic collective was established in the village of Chayek, which staged compact performances. In 1937-1938, this collective actively developed, presenting large-scale concert programs. The first leader was Abdyshym Kөbөgеnov. In 1939, a theater opened in Naryn, where A. Kөbөgеnov was invited as a director, and many group members followed him. Thus, the Naryn Musical and Dramatic Theater was founded on the talent of the residents of Jumgal. Currently, there are 4 music schools, more than 15 rural Houses of Culture, about 20 libraries, a district House of Culture, a cinema, as well as the centralized library named after S. Baygaziev and a historical and ethnographic museum operating in Jumgal District.

Educational Achievements

After 1917, Soviet schools began to open in the villages of Jany-Aryk, Chon-Dobo, Baizak, and Chayek. Over the years, the material and technical base and the quality of education improved. About 15 graduates from this district became doctors of science, and about 100 became candidates of science. The first honored teachers include Kudaybergen Karynbaev, Abdy Baltabaev, Otunchu Nogoybaev, Azhyke Ibraimov, Sh. Kenjekulov, A. Toktobekov, M. Kadiev, Z. Mombaeva, Zh. Amanaliev, S. Turusbekov, and K. Arykov. Currently, there are more than 20 kindergartens operating in Jumgal District.

Healthcare System

In 1927, a 15-bed hospital was opened in a private house in the village of Chayek. In 1932, a medical institution with 25 beds began operating, and in 1980, an additional building was constructed, increasing the total number of beds to 225. By 1990, the number of beds had doubled to 440. Among the outstanding medical professionals from Jumgal, we can highlight Gulai Abdykadyrova, who became an honored obstetrician-gynecologist, surgeon Aaly Orozobekov, awarded the Order of the October Revolution, and many others who received titles of health excellence. In 2002, as a result of reforms, the medical system of the district was divided into the Family Medicine Center and the territorial hospital, and since 2021, they have been merged into the Jumgal District Center for General Medical Practice.

Natural Resources

Jumgal District is renowned for its natural and economic resources. It contains various elements from the periodic table, including metals, salts, and minerals. Currently, about 25 coal mining companies operate in the district, and coal from Jumgal is supplied to different regions of the country. Small and medium-sized businesses are also actively developing: there is a poultry farm in the village of Kuyruchuk, fish farming enterprises in the villages of Tүgөl-Sai, Jany-Aryk, and Beshterek, and a mineral sparkling water production facility in the village of Kök-Oy.
