In the first days of the new Australian legislation banning access to social networks for individuals under 16, Meta Platforms removed over 550,000 accounts on its platforms Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. This large-scale cleanup was prompted by the introduction of age restrictions, under which technology companies are required to disable profiles of minors to avoid hefty fines. This was reported by The Guardian.

From December 4 to December 11, 2025, Meta deactivated approximately 330,639 accounts on Instagram, 173,497 on Facebook, and 39,916 on Threads that may have violated the established requirements.
Despite compliance with the new regulations, Meta expressed concern about the difficulties associated with accurately determining users' ages and called for improved cooperation with regulatory bodies.
The new Australian law is considered one of the strictest in the world regarding age restrictions for social media use, sparking active discussions about its effectiveness and impact on the digital lives of teenagers.
