The development of a new bill in France, according to information from Le Monde, is aimed at protecting children from potential threats associated with excessive use of internet platforms. In particular, it addresses risks such as "inappropriate content," cyberbullying, and sleep issues.

The bill includes two main provisions: the first prohibits "the provision of social networking services to children under 15 years old," and the second introduces a ban on the use of mobile phones in secondary schools.

President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for this initiative and stated that discussions in parliament will begin in January. The new rule is expected to come into effect on September 1, 2026, at the start of the new school year.

However, as noted by Le Monde, a law was passed in France in 2023 that established a "digital legal age" of 15, but it has been blocked, which may indicate a violation of European Union regulations.

The Senate has already supported the proposed changes and forwarded them to the National Assembly, which must approve them before they become law.

Incidentally, in early December, Australia passed the world's first law prohibiting children under 16 from using social media.
