Retinopathy of prematurity is diagnosed within the first three weeks of a child's life.
Mandatory examination by an ophthalmologist is required for all children born before 35 weeks of gestation. In Bishkek, such examinations are conducted at the NCMMCH, while in the regions, they are carried out at central regional hospitals, where doctors have undergone special training for screening this condition.
Experts emphasize that parents cannot independently determine the early stages of the disease, so early consultation with doctors in the first weeks after birth is very important.
Starting in 2024, the NCMMCH began performing surgeries to treat retinopathy of prematurity, marking a significant step in the development of this field. The number of children receiving specialized treatment increased from 42 cases in 2024 to 79 in 2025.
Currently, doctors are using modern methods such as laser coagulation and anti-VEGF therapy, made possible by the support of the High Technology Fund of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, and are also employing combined approaches. This indicates a shift from merely expanding screening to forming an active model for treating retinopathy of prematurity in the country.
Experts remind that every premature child should undergo examinations by an ophthalmologist, ENT specialist, neurologist, and pediatrician. Only a comprehensive approach and early monitoring can help identify potential deviations and preserve the child's health.
