The National Center for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood marked the International Day of Premature Babies.

As reported by the institution, on November 17, 2009, the International Day of Premature Babies was established at the initiative of the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI). According to the World Health Organization, globally, 6-8% of newborns are premature.

In Kyrgyzstan, about 10-12 thousand premature babies are born each year.
“The process of caring for premature newborns requires significant costs and efforts, including creating conditions as close as possible to those in the mother's womb, as well as supporting their immature organs. Since 2004, Kyrgyzstan has fully transitioned to the newborn registration standards recommended by the WHO. According to these standards, children born after the 22nd week of pregnancy and weighing more than 500 grams are registered. Parents of such babies need not only quality medical care and financial assistance but also psychological support from healthcare workers and society as a whole,” the NCPCM said in a statement.

Medical professionals emphasize that prematurity is not a sentence.

Many of these children grow up healthy, full-fledged, and often become outstanding individuals. Each year, there is an increase in the survival rate of premature newborns in different countries, and new technologies and methods contribute to reducing the level of disability.

This day has been celebrated in Kyrgyzstan for the tenth time.
