Omurzak Tolobekov, a producer and screenwriter known for works such as "President and Homeless," "Moscow Love," "Love of a Millionaire," "Revolution," "Son of Manas Semetei," and "Love and Wealth," is actively involved in the international project "Manas." He has already traveled with it to the USA, Europe, and Asian countries. In anticipation of the Epic Day of "Manas," we discussed with the filmmaker the prospects of the large-scale film, the political situation, and the recent renaming of Jalal-Abad.
- Omurzak Zholdoshevich, what innovations are happening in your creative activities?
- We have been negotiating for a long time with film companies from the USA, China, and Turkey about collaborating on the feature film "Manas." This is a complex and large-scale project, and each side has proposed its ideas. At the moment, we have reached the final stage of agreement. The interest of foreign partners in Kyrgyz epic culture is inspiring. If everything goes according to plan, we will soon be able to officially launch the production of the film.
- You have also created documentaries about the revolutions of 2010–2020. How do you assess the current political situation in Kyrgyzstan?
- We all know that the political situation is becoming increasingly tense. This is actively discussed even with compatriots abroad. The issues raised by the opposition, such as rising prices and freedom of speech, have long been known. However, I am concerned about the increasing Chinese influence in our region. Six months ago, when I was flying from New York to Tashkent and then to Kazakhstan, I noticed a significant increase in the number of Chinese citizens at the border. This concerns not only Kyrgyzstan but also Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Russia. It is part of broader geopolitical processes. Trump stated at the beginning of his presidency that it was necessary to establish relations with Russia and get closer to China. Now, as the USA and Russia begin to soften their relations, and in the event of the conflict in Ukraine coming to an end, the political situation in Central Asia will undoubtedly change.
- What is your opinion on the renaming of Jalal-Abad to Manas?
- I received this news with great pleasure. Naming a major city after Manas is a bold and far-sighted step. As Kamchybek Tashiev rightly noted, Manas is the heritage of the entire Kyrgyz people. The support of this decision by Kydyrshaevich, who is himself from Jalal-Abad, is a significant political gesture that transcends the boundaries of tribalism.
