On October 22, an international conference dedicated to wildlife conservation and the development of mountain communities in Central Asia began in Bishkek, coinciding with the International Snow Leopard Day. The theme of the conference, "Strengthening the resilience of wildlife and communities in the mountains of Central Asia – results and scaling of the project 'Adaptation of Mammals to Climate Change in Central Asia' (AMIK in CA)," gathered representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of Kyrgyzstan, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, the Committee for Environmental Protection of Tajikistan, the German Embassy in the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as staff from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). In his speech, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision Almaz Musaev emphasized that the mountain ecosystem of Central Asia faces serious threats. “Ecological corridors are becoming one of the effective ways to counter these challenges. In Kyrgyzstan, with the support of the United Nations Environment Programme and international partners, the ecological corridor 'Ak Ilbirs' has been created, covering an area of 800,000 hectares. It connects important ecosystem zones and helps preserve migration routes. Nature conservation tasks are not limited to ecological aspects; they also have socio-economic significance,” noted Musaev.
