In Bishkek, a forum titled "Business, Ecology, and Sports — Ak-Irbis 2025" is taking place, dedicated to the International Snow Leopard Day, celebrated on October 23. This day was established by a resolution of the UN General Assembly at the initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The gathering brought together representatives from business, sports organizations, and ecological initiatives to support the conservation of the snow leopard (irbis) and the high-altitude ecosystems of Kyrgyzstan. The date of October 23 is significant for all 12 countries where this animal resides.
Dina Kemeleva, the special representative of the President of Kyrgyzstan for the implementation of the Decade of Action for Mountain Development, congratulated the participants on this significant date.
“The snow leopard is a symbol of our mountains, a reflection of the beauty of the wild. This day is being celebrated for the first time after the adoption of the UN resolution at the initiative of President Sadyr Japarov, which was supported by partner countries. For Kyrgyzstan, the snow leopard is not just a rare species; it is our national symbol, according to a presidential decree adopted in 2023. This predator also embodies a part of our cultural identity and reminds us of the connection between humans and nature,” she emphasized.
Kemeleva noted that the snow leopard serves as an indicator of the health of the country's ecosystem; however, this species is currently under threat due to climate change.
We are witnessing glaciers melting and snow cover disappearing. The loss of habitats and instances of poaching continue to be serious problems.

According to Kemeleva, the conservation of the snow leopard is “the preservation of a source of life for future generations.” Kyrgyzstan takes pride in its initiative to launch a global program for the protection of this animal and its ecosystem.
She also expressed hope for the creation of an eco-museum dedicated to the snow leopard.
“Kyrgyzstan will continue to be a symbol of mountains and the snow leopard, a country where nature and humans live in harmony and create a sustainable future for all,” she concluded.
