At the international conference "Water, Mountains, and Glaciers of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sustainable Future," Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry Almaz Zheenaliev reported that according to a study by the World Resources Institute, which analyzes the water management of Central Asian countries, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan hold high positions in terms of water risk, with indicators of 3.74 and 3.63, respectively.

Kyrgyzstan, he noted, has a water risk indicator of 3.28, which also places the country in the high-risk category.

In comparison to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, which have average values of 2.51 and 3.34, Kyrgyzstan is facing serious pressure on its water resources.
“This is a very alarming signal, especially against the backdrop of factors such as decreasing river flow, melting glaciers, and increasing water consumption in the agricultural and industrial sectors. These facts highlight the need for immediate and systemic measures for water resource management,” he emphasized.
Zheenaliev added that in response to these challenges, the Kyrgyz Republic has adopted a National Water Strategy until 2040, which has created the necessary legislative and institutional framework for sustainable water resource management.

Additionally, in 2020, the National Development Program of the Kyrgyz Republic until 2030 was approved, which also addresses issues of optimizing water resource use, the deputy minister emphasized.
