Kyrgyzstan has rich water potential
The Ministry of Water Resources and Agriculture reported that the level of "water stress" in Kyrgyzstan has reached a critical mark of 3.28, indicating an approach to a pre-crisis situation.
During the round table, current issues regarding the state of water resources, prospects for irrigation, and the creation of a comprehensive investment strategy for this sector were discussed.
Despite the presence of significant water resources, their availability for use remains limited, negatively impacting sectors such as agriculture, energy, and the provision of drinking water to the population.
The republic has:
— an annual river runoff of approximately 50 billion cubic meters;
— 14 billion cubic meters of groundwater;
— nearly 10,000 glaciers;
— more than 45,000 rivers with a total length of about 168,000 kilometers.
Given the importance of developing the water sector and in accordance with the presidential decree, Kyrgyzstan is actively promoting climate policy issues. In this regard, an investment strategy is being developed aimed at the construction and modernization of reservoirs, reconstruction of irrigation systems, implementation of water-saving technologies, digitization of water resource accounting, and adaptation of infrastructure to climate change, as well as the training of specialists.
