No Cash. Uzbekistan Introduces Strict Restrictions on Purchases
Starting in 2026, it will also be prohibited to use cash for paying for electricity, fuel, services of government institutions, and goods costing more than 25 million sums (which is approximately equivalent to 183 thousand sums). All transactions must be conducted exclusively cashless.
According to the authorities, these measures are aimed at combating the shadow economy and gradually transitioning to a reduction in cash circulation, which is expected to be completed by 2030. The decree also anticipates that the share of cashless payments will increase to 75 percent.
Local media report that the transition period will begin next year, and the restrictions will be implemented gradually to allow businesses and the population to adapt to the new conditions.
