In Kyrgyzstan, a new methodological guide has been created that allows for a quick assessment of the condition of pasture lands. This method enables the determination of soil degradation levels and vegetation quality within 30–40 minutes. As Natalia Kilyazova, head of the Pastures and Forage Department at the Research Institute under the Ministry of Agriculture, explained, this solution is the result of collaborative work between leading scientific institutions and veterinary services. The assessment is based on key indicators such as the condition of vegetation, the level of stoniness, and the presence of weeds, which allows specialists to take prompt measures to preserve the forage base.
The first experiments using this method showed that the famous Susamyr Valley maintains a diversity of vegetation; however, it faces a serious threat from the aggressive spread of the shrub Caragana (altigan). Local livestock breeders were the first to notice that this rapidly encroaching plant makes free grazing impossible. In response to this problem, specialists began applying effective control methods: in flat areas, low-toxicity herbicides are used, allowing forage grasses to recover within one season, while in challenging zones, mechanical uprooting is conducted followed by reseeding with perennial grasses.
The ministry emphasizes that the cleaning of pastures is carried out purposefully and under strict environmental control. The main goal is to halt the process of land degradation and restore their status as a full-fledged forage base, as the spread of Caragana threatens not only the availability of food for livestock but also their safety. Plans to implement the new assessment method and combat unwanted shrubs will be extended throughout the republic to prevent the depletion of natural resources and support the country's livestock sector.
