The Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, in collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme, has announced the launch of a new project aimed at creating a climate-resilient agricultural value chain.

According to information from the Ministry of Agriculture, the project is being implemented with financial assistance from the Government of Japan. The signing of the agreement took place at the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University during the "AgroDialogue – 2026" forum. The ceremony was attended by Minister Bakyt Torobaev, the Japanese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Hirano Ryuichi, the Country Director of the UN WFP in the country Kojiro Nakai, and the representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Nishigata Kotaro.

Torobaev emphasized that the agricultural sector is facing serious challenges: the consequences of climate change, water scarcity, and difficulties in accessing modern agricultural technologies.

“This project aligns with our priorities to increase productivity in agriculture and develop cooperatives, which in turn will enhance the resilience of farmers,” noted the minister.

The Japanese government will allocate $4.5 million for the implementation of this project, which will assist 17,000 small farmers in the Batken, Jalal-Abad, and Osh regions.

The project aims to strengthen food security, improve nutrition, and increase the incomes of the population in regions most affected by climate change. Special attention will be given to supporting women farmers through the creation of self-help groups and the development of agricultural cooperatives.

As part of this initiative, farmers will be provided with:

Additionally, the project plans to include educational programs on climate-adapted agricultural practices, post-harvest processing, cooperative management, and financial planning.

The implementation of the project is expected to increase the productivity of the agricultural sector, strengthen market connections in mountainous regions, and ensure sustainable management of water and land resources.
