Conditions are being created in Kyrgyzstan for the industrial cultivation of medicinal herbs

The draft law, which has received approval in the first reading from the Jogorku Kenesh, aims to develop systematic cultivation of medicinal plants. According to VB.KG, this document creates a legal framework for transitioning from the traditional gathering of wild herbs in the mountains to the organization of specialized agricultural plantations. Experts call this initiative a strategic victory for Kyrgyzstan in the context of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development of the country.

Currently, Kyrgyzstan remains one of the main suppliers of wild raw materials. However, uncontrolled harvesting of herbs in the ecosystems of the Tien Shan leads to the depletion of rare plant species, deterioration of pasture conditions, and destruction of soil cover. Ecologists note that the reduction of vegetation cover in high-altitude areas negatively affects the forage base for wild animals, including the snow leopard, and contributes to soil erosion. Shifting production processes to agricultural lands can significantly reduce the pressure on vulnerable mountain ecosystems.

The draft law proposes to change the market by transitioning from the traditional "gathered and sold" model to modern agricultural production with certification and a raw material tracking system. According to analysts, this will not only help preserve rare plant species but also significantly enhance the country's export potential in the growing global herbal medicine market. For farmers working in remote regions, cultivating medicinal plants can become a profitable alternative to traditional agriculture, especially in challenging climatic conditions.

However, specialists emphasize that the successful implementation of the reform requires a comprehensive approach. This includes developing clear licensing mechanisms, providing farmers with quality seeds, and scientific monitoring of wild populations. Only with effective control and support for producers can Kyrgyzstan achieve a balance between economic benefits and the preservation of its unique natural heritage for future generations.
