In the most remote region of Kyrgyzstan from the capital, there is a village with an unusual name "Jin-Jigen." What does it mean?
The correspondent of Turmush reports that the name of this settlement sparks lively interest among the residents and guests of the region.
According to a local resident, Russian language and literature teacher Kalmurza Idaev, the village was previously named Zhylyzhygan.
“The village of Jin-Jigen got its name from the water that flows slowly and in small volumes [Kyrgyz - жылжып аккан суу]. It was previously called Zhylyzhygan, and in its upper part, there were 37 springs from which water flowed slowly. Then this water collected in one place and flowed through a channel, slowly making its way through the village. It is from this phenomenon that the name of the settlement originates,” he noted.
Over time, the name Zhylyzhygan changed to Jin-Jigen. This happened when cartographers, working on maps of lands and bodies of water, decided to change the name, as the Russians could not pronounce “Zhylyzhygan” correctly. As a result, a name that was easier to pronounce — “Jin-Jigen” — was chosen, which remains in official documents.
It should be noted that the word “Jin-Jigen” does not have a specific meaning in the Kyrgyz language. When people first hear this name, they often express surprise and wonder what it means. Some even suggest that jinn (spirits) [Kyrgyz - жин] once lived in our village,” he added.
The village of Jin-Jigen is divided into two parts: Chon Jin-Jigen (Big Jin-Jigen) and Kichine Jin-Jigen (Small Jin-Jigen), with a distance of about one kilometer between them. Chon Jin-Jigen is mainly inhabited by elderly people, while Kichine Jin-Jigen is populated by young families.
The total number of residents in the village exceeds 1,100 people, and the number of households is 175.
More than 170 students study at the incomplete school named after Alykula Osmonov.
The main occupations of the local residents include livestock breeding and agriculture.
