Hurricane 'Melissa', the most powerful in history, hits Jamaica, casualties reported

The maximum wind speed at the center of the storm reached 295 km/h

On the evening of October 28, Jamaica faced Hurricane 'Melissa', which was classified as a Category 5 storm — the highest level of danger.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) data, this hurricane became the most powerful in the world in 2025 and the strongest ever to pass over Jamaica since meteorological observations began in 1851.

According to international news agencies, about 900 shelters were opened in the country, and two international airports in Jamaica temporarily suspended operations.

The wind speed at the hurricane's epicenter reached 295 km/h, causing significant destruction: trees were uprooted, buildings were damaged, and flooding occurred, leaving many areas without electricity.

Unfortunately, during the preparations for the hurricane in Jamaica, three people lost their lives, and four casualties were reported in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jamaica's Minister of Health, Chris Tufton, noted that around 15 people were injured during the evacuation and preparations for the hurricane.

In Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the hurricane also caused significant damage, with hundreds of homes flooded.

Currently, 'Melissa' is moving north towards Cuba, where 735,000 people have already been evacuated. The hurricane will then head towards the Bahamas.
