The fire in the residential complex, which houses about 4,800 people, started on November 26 and was fully extinguished only on November 28. At the time of extinguishing, there were reports of 128 fatalities and 200 missing persons.
Eight buildings in the complex had been under renovation since July 2024. Initial investigations indicate that the cause of the fire may have been polystyrene used during the repair work, which contributed to the rapid spread of the flames within the premises. The use of bamboo scaffolding installed on the facades of the buildings was also considered. In connection with the incident, law enforcement agencies detained three suspects for involuntary manslaughter, including two directors and a consultant from the contractor responsible for the renovation.
