A modern oil refinery is being built in Mongolia — an important step for the petrochemical industry.

With the implementation of the project carried out by the Mongolian Oil Refinery Company, we, as a nation, are facing new challenges while gaining valuable experience.

As production nears completion, a delegation led by the Executive Director of Mongol Refinery LLC, Altancetseg Dashdavaa, along with engineers and department heads, is conducting inspections at factories in Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, and Pune.

The inspection team is checking the production process of distillation columns, high-pressure vessels, and other equipment, as well as monitoring testing and readiness for shipment.

At the Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) factories in Hyderabad, the production of 28 high-pressure vessels for the oil refinery project has been successfully completed.

In Chennai, KCP Limited is manufacturing key technological elements of the refinery, such as an atmospheric distillation column measuring 58.4 meters in length, weighing 245 tons, and with a diameter of 3.2 meters, as well as a vacuum distillation column measuring 49.7 meters in length, weighing 230 tons, and with a diameter of 4.8 meters.

The quality control process for the distillation columns includes 17 stages, such as heat treatment, non-destructive testing, and leak testing. These columns will be divided into four sections and shipped to Mongolia by sea from Chennai to Tianjin.

Representatives of Mongol Refinery LLC, as well as project consultants Engineers India Limited and contractors MEIL, held technical meetings to discuss the progress of work and confirm the timelines for packaging and transportation.

The equipment is expected to be delivered to the construction site in Dornogovi aimag by early 2026 for installation.

The project for the construction of the oil refinery in Altanshiree sum is being carried out with the support of a concessional loan from the Indian government.

The planned capacity of the new refinery will be 1.5 million tons of oil per year. As part of the project, a 27-kilometer railway and a 17.2-kilometer paved road have been built, connecting the plant to the national transport network. The new refinery will be able to meet 50-100% of domestic demand and create 1,500 jobs.

A 110 kV overhead power line has also been constructed, and the site for the plant has been prepared and leveled. Geological exploration work is underway to assess oil reserves, which currently stand at 35 million tons.
