Together with the Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine, Andriy Hnatov, and the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, he discussed with the American representatives, including Donald Trump's special envoy Stephen Witkoff and U.S. President's son-in-law Jared Kushner, the next steps towards establishing peace.
According to the president, the conversation was "long and substantive," during which key issues necessary to cease hostilities and prevent a new invasion from Russia were addressed.
"We touched on many aspects and quickly discussed important points that can help stop the bloodshed and reduce the threat of a third Russian invasion, as well as ensure Russia fulfills its obligations," Zelensky noted.
He added that the parties reached an agreement on further steps and formats of interaction. The president also emphasized that some issues require more detailed discussion, so he expects a report from Umerov and Hnatov on the outcomes of the negotiations.
According to Axios, the phone conversation lasted about two hours, and the negotiation process in Miami has been ongoing for three days. Witkoff and Kushner are working to gather the positions of both sides and apply pressure on Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to achieve the necessary concessions.
The territorial issue remains one of the most complex. Russia demands the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from areas in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions controlled by Kyiv, while the U.S. is seeking new approaches to this problem, Axios reports.
As for security guarantees for Ukraine, sources indicate significant progress in the negotiations; however, it is necessary to agree on the interpretation of certain points.
Umerov and Hnatov are expected to return from Miami to Europe and hold a briefing for Zelensky in London on Monday. Negotiations with American representatives will continue next week.
