Ships will be equipped with railguns, lasers, and nuclear missiles
US President Donald Trump announced plans to build two new military ships, which will represent a "completely new class." These vessels will be armed with hypersonic weapons, lasers, and will be capable of carrying nuclear weapons and cruise missiles. Construction is expected to take about 2.5 years, according to news sources.
At a ceremony at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, Trump noted that this is part of a program to create a "new golden fleet," which could ultimately include 20 to 25 ships, starting with an initial 10.
“Our combat ships will be equipped with modern guns and top-level missiles. Additionally, they will receive hypersonic weapons, advanced electric railguns, and powerful lasers. They will also be equipped with nuclear warheads and sea-based cruise missiles that are currently in development,” Trump stated, adding that the new vessels will also feature artificial intelligence components.
According to him, these ships will displace between 30,000 and 40,000 tons and will become the flagships of the US Navy. The project is expected to be allocated $26 billion. Trump specified that the new vessels will be built from steel rather than aluminum, and construction will begin soon.
The president is confident that the new ships will be “the largest in world history.” The design of the vessels will be developed in collaboration with the Navy, considering that Trump sees himself as “a very aesthetic person.”
Additionally, Trump announced the construction of 15 new submarines, adding that Washington has more than 30 submarines available.
In September, Trump criticized the appearance of existing US Navy ships, claiming that stealth ships do not necessarily have to look “ugly.” He also reminded of plans to supply the US Navy with 19 new vessels, including submarines, destroyers, and assault ships.
At the end of October, The Wall Street Journal reported Trump's intentions to create a "golden fleet" to counter threats from China.
Trump also announced the allocation of more than $1 trillion for defense needs, and the US military budget for 2026 will amount to $901 billion.
