The renaming concerns a number of objects and is specifically related to the need to correct the names of places and bodies of water that were previously given in languages other than Mongolian, such as Russian, Kazakh, and Tuvan.
The decision to restore Mongolian names was the result of field studies conducted in collaboration with various institutions.
In 2023, with the support of the Main Office of Land Use, Geodesy, and Cartography, the Academy of Sciences, and the National Language Policy Council, a review of 319 objects whose names were changed was conducted. For example, Potanin Glacier is now called Khuiten Glacier, which translates to "cold," Mount Zholt has become Mount Yolt-Uul, and Chikhachev Ridge is now Siilkhem Ridge, meaning "cut up."
Additionally, 47 names of mountains and hills in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia were recorded that did not have official status in the Bayan-Ölgii aimag.
From 2021 to 2022, a database of geographical names was created for 13 soums of the Sukhbaatar aimag.
According to Article 8, Section 1 of the Constitution of Mongolia, "the Mongolian language is the official language of the state," which is also confirmed by Article 6.1.7 of the Law on the Mongolian Language, stipulating that the names of territories and administrative units must be in the Mongolian language.
