According to information from the meteorological agency of Mongolia, in the somon of Tosontsengel, located in the western Mongolian aimag of Zavkhan, nighttime temperatures reached -43°C from Monday to Tuesday.
Tosontsengel is the coldest area in Mongolia, where a record temperature of -52.9°C was recorded in the 1960s.
The climate in this region is characterized by extreme conditions and falls under the temperate climate zone. Here, winter temperatures range from -52.9°C to +38°C in summer.
According to the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring, this temperature has become the lowest in Mongolia this winter.
Since the beginning of the past weekend, heavy snowfall and winds have swept across the western and central regions of the country, leading to a drop in temperature.
The agency warns that such extremely cold conditions are expected to last until Wednesday and recommends that the population, including herders and drivers, exercise caution due to possible disasters.
Winter in Mongolia is characterized by prolonged cold spells, with temperatures ranging from -25°C to -45°C.
Tosontsengel is a somon in the Zavkhan aimag, located in western Mongolia.
The center of the somon is the village of Shumuultai, which is located 180 kilometers from the administrative center of the aimag, the city of Uliastai, and approximately 800 kilometers from the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar.
