The bank was closed for the Christmas holidays
In Gelsenkirchen (North Rhine-Westphalia), thieves took advantage of the closure of the Sparkasse savings bank during the Christmas holidays and broke into the underground vault. They tunneled in by drilling a hole through the concrete wall from a neighboring parking lot.
Inside were more than 3,000 safe deposit boxes, most of which were opened by the criminals. About 2,700 bank customers fell victim to the robbery, losing their valuables.
Loss estimates vary, with some sources indicating an amount of around 30 million euros, including cash, gold, and other jewelry. At the same time, other reports suggest that insurance payouts could reach 33.9 million euros. Exact figures regarding the value of the stolen property are still being clarified.
