Islamist groups in Bangladesh return to public politics ahead of elections

In the lead-up to the elections scheduled for February 12, Islamist parties in Bangladesh are beginning to show increased activity. They intend to take advantage of the changed political situation following a long period of restrictions, as reported by Barron’s.

With a population of about 170 million, the majority of whom practice Sunni Islam, Bangladesh is preparing for its first elections after significant events in 2024 that have impacted the political landscape. In this context, several Islamist organizations have started active mobilization to secure positions in government.

Among the most influential parties is the "Jamaat-e-Islami," which, having overcome years of bans and pressure, is striving to return to the formal political process. In the elections, this party and its allies are forming coordinated candidate lists and engaging with other political forces, including the National Civil Party, created by students who led the protests of 2024.

Under the previous government, authorities implemented a harsh policy towards Islamist movements, leading to prosecutions and restrictions on their activities. With the change in the political situation, some Islamist leaders have been released, and the movements themselves have become more visible in public life.

In their programmatic statements, Islamist parties emphasize the need to protect traditional values and propose regulations on cultural events that they believe contradict religious norms. Within these movements, there is ideological diversity, encompassing both Deobandi and Wahhabi and Salafi groups.

Other religious currents also maintain significant influence in society. The Sufi tradition holds an important place among Muslims in Bangladesh, and the country is also home to Shia Muslims, Ahmadis, and non-Muslims, including Hindus and Christians. This religious pluralism remains an important aspect of the political balance.

Experts emphasize that the participation of Islamist parties in the elections is part of a broader process of political transformation and the search for a new equilibrium in the country. Analysts note that the actual degree of influence of these forces will depend on the election results and the willingness of various political actors to engage in dialogue within the constitutional process.
