The official decision to withdraw came into effect on January 27, exactly one year after the notification sent by the USA to the UN, as reported by the secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
President Trump signed the withdrawal order on the day of his inauguration in January 2025. The goal of the Paris Agreement is to limit global warming and mitigate the most dangerous consequences of climate change.
Now the USA will not adhere to commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This also means that the American delegation will cease participation in international climate forums. The country's exit from the agreement will significantly reduce funding for programs aimed at helping poor countries adapt to climate change and combat its effects.
According to data, the USA ranks second in the world for greenhouse gas emissions, surpassed only by China. UN estimates suggest that if current climate policies remain unchanged, by the end of the century, the average temperature on Earth will rise by 2.8 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels, and the USA's withdrawal from the agreement could increase this figure by an additional 0.1 degrees.
Martin Kaiser, head of Greenpeace Deutschland, characterized Trump's decision as a "geopolitical arson" that serves the interests of the oil and gas industry.
He emphasized that Europe should avoid panic and continue to form new partnerships to implement climate policy. In his opinion, abandoning climate protection would be a "wrong step" and a "capitulation to Trump."
This is already the second instance of the USA withdrawing from the Paris Agreement under Trump; during his first term, the country also left the agreement, but after Joe Biden came to power, it returned to it.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration announced plans to withdraw from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and cease participation in the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
